The Amazing Peacock Spider
Australia is home to many strange and unusual animals. However this tiny jumping spider only found in Queensland and New South Wales is the sort of thing the average Sydney bushwalker would pass right by. But not Acarologist Dr Jurgen Otto. His photographs revealed a most extraordinary looking jumping spider:
Peacock Spiders are tiny. Adults will not get larger than 5mm in lengths. Yet when it comes to the mating dance this tiny spider shows that to impress a female, size is certainly not everything ;-) See one of the most amazing spectacles in the animal world that was filmed by Dr Jurgen Otto:
To get the females attention the male waves his legs at the female. Watching closely the female judges the display… The male vibrates his abdomen as the excitement rises and then his final extraordinary act: Like a peacock, he raises two brilliantly colored flaps and dances for the female.
“When I came to Sydney I was a bit bored because there wasn’t enough to photograph but now I don’t want to live anywhere else. I think it’s probably the most beautiful spider in the world.” – Dr Jurgen Otto
